Before Stepping into Tomorrow Shanghai Confucius Temple, located at No. 215 Wenmiao Road, Huangpu District, was built in 1855. Today, when we refer to the Shanghai Confucius Temple, we are not only talking about the temple itself, but also its surrounding neighborhoods. This area carries the childhood memories of many Shanghainese, where each generation has left its unique impressions and stories. Since 2022, the temple has been undergoing expansion while its surrounding neighborhoods are being renovated, scheduled to transform into a Confucian culture-themed tourism hub by 2026. The former Shanghai Confucius Temple now resides deep in collective memory, becoming a hometown that we can never return to.

"Tomorrow" represents an approaching new era that carries expectations for preserving and revitalizing traditional culture. The exhibition “Before Stepping into Tomorrow” invites us to pause and revisit those unrecorded, fading pasts that are destined to be lost in tomorrow's arrival. The exhibition works present multidimensional and fragmented impressions of Shanghai Confucius Temple: it has been both the official narrative's sacred Confucian site and Shanghai citizens' playground, anime merchandise street, residential community with family and friends, secondhand book market, temple for praying for academic success, snack street, leisure garden, and patriotic lecture hall... These pieces reflect the temple's functional evolution--primarily serving Confucianism, entertainment, and education--as well as the transformations of its surrounding neighborhood over the past 170 years. More profoundly, they reveal the conflicts, interweaving and symbiosis within this area between official positioning and civilian life, tradition and modernity, sanctity and mundanity.

The exhibition prompts us to ponder: How has Shanghai Confucius become both a symbol of traditional culture and a spiritual homeland unites diverse groups' emotional connections and sense of belongings? As a Confucian holy site, how does it interact with diverse cultures and ideas in modernization, constantly being redefined through collisions? As a public space, how has its continuous reconstruction distanced former communities while shaping new collective memories? Before stepping into tomorrow, the exhibition invites us to place these feelings of loss and nostalgia, and to re-examine the relationship between memory, history, past, present and future.
