Cycle Space will present a group exhibition "Secrets" on March 1, 2024, featuring recent works by four artists: Cao Jinyan, Toi, Qu Xiaoxiao, and Yu Yu.
Cao Jinyan excels at using vibrant colors and delicate brushstrokes to render the dazzling and profound mysteries of urban female life. The women in her paintings often have slender limbs and exquisite makeup, living in gorgeous settings but with expressionless faces. In Sage, the center of the painting is an elaborately decorated Christmas tree, under which a girl dressed in a mink coat and a dragon fruit-colored gold lace stocking stands alone. Amidst the warm atmosphere of the holiday, the girl shines in a deep purple background, with light spots flickering like a lonely eye silently watching everything, hiding secrets in the darkness.
Toi brings life and vitality to her works through her unique painting style. In her paintings, running people and cats are decomposed into shapes, straight lines, and curves, creating a seemingly Cubist style that originates from post-millennial anime culture traits. Combined with dancing brushstrokes and pigments, they reveal the alternative secrets in the hearts of this generation of artists - the unique joy and freedom within. "Only Child" isn’t an objective condition but a mindset, a state of solitude in childhood, searching alone during growth, and enjoying life alone as an adult, relying on oneself for energy rather than external sources.
Qu Xiaoxiao's "Secrets" focuses on nature, revealing multiple facets of secrecy through concise, clean lines and unique compositional techniques. His works are layered, polished, and refined multiple times, exhibiting the intricate hierarchy reminiscent of traditional Chinese lacquerware. The extensive use of pure colors contrasts with the subtle growth of animals and plants in a vibrant and fantastical natural world, hinting that what we see is only a glimpse of the iceberg, and the deeper secrets of nature remain unseen.
Yu Yu, who graduated from the Chinese Painting department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, has been painting since childhood and possesses solid traditional Chinese painting skills. After graduating from her undergraduate studies, she went on to pursue a master's degree at the China National Academy of Arts, focusing on the contemporary transformation of traditional languages and materials. Her keen observation and rich imagination have led her to discover the original intention of creation through years of interaction with silk, resulting in the series “As the silk of life". In the traditional process of silk reeling, the silkworm destined to be killed can never break out of its cocoon to become a moth. Yu Yu has been troubled by the impermanence of life represented in this process. However, after learning that modern silk production can simultaneously guarantee both weaving and the silkworm's survival, she realized that it was the thousands of weaving workers who were being sacrificed. Does embracing modernity necessarily mean abandoning tradition? In this moment, is it the moth or the familiar yet alienated thousand-year-old craftsmanship that is dying?
The works of the four artists, Cao Jinyan, Toi, Qu Xiaoxiao, and Yu Yu, explore the theme of "Secrets" through different artistic expressions and perspectives. Whether dark, joyful, mysterious, or ancient, they all contain unique encodings and infinite possibilities.
